Friends of the Valentine Gas Lamp

About Us

The Friends of the Valentine Gas Lamp group has been set up by friends and family of Reg Ling to carry out urgent restoration work on the lamp, preserve all information relating to its interesting history, and thereafter to ensure its future as the only working lamp of its type in Somerset.

The group is looking for help and support. Please email if you would like to help out in any way - any offer of practical, financial, or moral support welcome! Also any interesting stories or photographs for this site are always welcome.
Donations are welcome, cheques made payable to Friends of the Valentine Gas Lamp can be sent c/o 52 Forest Road, FROME, BA11 2TQ or contact

The famous Valentine Gas Lamp is to be found in Catherine Street, at the top of Catherine Hill in Frome, Somerset, England.

Catherine Hill is a delightful cobbled street, steeply ascending from the centre of the market town of Frome. The climb is worth the effort and softened by the opportunity to browse the many interesting and quirky shops along the way in what's known as the St Catherines quarter - no chain stores but lots of secondhand/vintage and artisan specialists - beads, jewellery, original artwork, flowers, dressmaking and haberdashery, old-fashioned hardware, yarns and wools, dress shops, a model shop, antiques and original artwork. Also a nice coffee shop with home-made cakes.

Please come along and see how the restoration work is progressing!
